Challenge: 1.5km swim in the dark
Details: The Autumn Aspire Night Swim is a different event. You are kitted out with glowsticks. There is the option for 750m/ 1.5k/ 5k and it’s your choice to wear a wetsuit or not. Please only swim at night as part of an organised event as, for obvious reasons, it can be quite dangerous.
Where? Oxford Wakeboard & Ski Club, Wallingford, OX10 7PQ
Transport? Would advise travelling by car as is on a small train line with infrequent trains
Bring? Wetsuit (if you want), goggles, towel, food and water, warm clothes, a thermos full of hot drink!
Food & drink? There is a great pub nearby for afterward called the The Chequers at Burcot. I recommend booking
Cost? £32-40 depending on the distance you choose
eXerK 52in52 story: The night swim was a bizarre experience. With glow sticks tucked into our swimming cap, we set off into the dark night splashing through a pitch black lake. Initially cold despite wearing wetsuits, within a few hundred metres we were nice and warm.
This was one of the challenges that I struggled with at the start, but by half way, I was in my rhythm and enjoying the swim. All the bobbing glowing heads made for a pretty sight so I treated myself to some breast stroke to enjoy the view. A great event, with a good atmosphere, and ranks highly for alternative swims.
