At the end of August 2016 I set out to hike to La Ciudad Perdida, a 4 day excursion known at the Lost City Trek. London velodrome cycling

Challenge: A velodrome flying lap Details: The VeloPark host taster sessions as well as improver courses. You are kitted out with track bikes, cycle shoes, helmets and gloves. The bikes have no brakes nor gears and your feet are clipped in so can take some getting used to. The instructors do a great job at coaching you from your first lap around the bottom, then getting a bit higher up the wooden velodrome, until you find yourself flying around the top. Where? Sa Calobra cycle in Mallorca

Challenge: 75km cycle, 2 mountains, 2.1km ascent Logistics: Long weekend in Port de Soller, Mallorca. Rented a nice road bike (for €35 per day) from Tramontana Tours and powered up a mountain, and down to the sea at Sa Calobra, before scaling the beautiful shoestring road back up again. Afterthoughts: As it is mid-June temperature gets pretty hot so left Soller at 7am, and was back having had a few photo pauses and snack breaks by 11.45am. Favourite morning in a long time.


Copenhagen Half Marathon

  Challenge: Copenhagen Half Marathon Details: 21.1km run around the streets of Copenhagen. Why? A mini break to an awesome city, tied in with a bit of alternative exploring. How? Book your place on the cphhalf.dk/en – cost £51. Where? Copenhagen, Denmark in September. Transport? Flights (flew for £58 return), then metro into city centre, then walked or cycled around for the rest of the weekend. Time? Challenge: 1.5km swim in the dark Details: The Autumn Aspire Night Swim is a different event. You are kitted out with glowsticks. There is the option for 750m/ 1.5k/ 5k and it’s your choice to wear a wetsuit or not. Please only swim at night as part of an organised event as, for obvious reasons, it can be quite dangerous. Challenge: London South Tough Mudder Details: A 12 mile obstacle course with 29 obstacles. Where? An hour and a half drive south of London Transport? Sea kayaking in Devon

Challenge: Sea kayaking in Devon Details: We booked through Sea Kayak Devon. They bring all the kayak gear and also kayak guides. Where? Dartmouth, Devon Transport? We rented an 8 seater car from Spaceships to get down there. When? You meet at 9.30am on Saturday morning in Dartmouth so best to drive down the night before. All ends at 4pm on Sunday afternoon. The wall crawl – 7 climbing centres in 1 day

Challenge: A tour of London’s climbing walls by bike. 52 bouldering climbs, 7 climbing centres, 52km cycling, 1 day Details: One of the toughest challenges, starting at 08.45am at the Westway in Fulham, we only finished the final climb just in time for the closing time at the Reach in Greenwich. The wall crawl is a feat in time management and map reading so make sure someone in your group is responsible for time, and perhaps another for map reading. We bouldered rather than climbed at each wall. Ben Lomond munro run

Challenge: Run to the summit of Ben Lomond Details:  Running/ hiking up Ben Lomond takes you up a 975m (3,200ft) ascent over an 11km (7mi) route. Info on hike.   Challenge: A cycle tour of London’s outdoor swimming pools and bathing ponds. Details: Cycle 40km and paddle your little hearts out swimming in 7 of London’s finest outdoor watering holes. Kind of like 8lidosin8days, but this time 7 lidos in ONE DAY. Boom! Meet at Hampstead Heath mixed pond and work your way down through London. Challenge: Hike Snowdon Details: There are a selection of routes up Snowdon. We chose the Watkin Path as we stayed at YHA Bryn Gwynant. Where? London to Cardiff 24hr team relay

Challenge: Team relay run covering 168 miles in 24 hours Details: As part of a team of 8-12 we will run the 168 miles from London to Cardiff in 24 hours (all being well). £60 entry per person There are 24 stages, which means each is just under 7 miles.
